Airlane (Gary Numan Tribute)

In a city teaming with tribute bands, Airlane has captured the ears of Austin, Texas in a very short time. Armed with vintage analog synthesizers and matching ‘new wave’ ties the band pays homage to the first few albums released by synth pioneer Gary Numan. While Numan only claims one big American hit, Airlane streaks through their set lists winning over guitar-fatigued audience members with their quirky keyboard riffs and cinematic stage performance. Airlane is fronted by Matt Korn whom, by all accounts, has been studying every idiosyncratic move of Gary Numan’s onstage persona. With a dystopian light show and a fog induced backdrop, Korn guides audiences back to the late-70’s and early 80’s when Numan himself was climbing up the charts and turning popular music upside down. The rest of the band is comprised of stalwarts of the Austin music scene, each of them a thoroughbred at their respective instrument. Fun is the name of the game here, though, and screaming guitar riffs and Moon-like drum fills have been replaced by the simple, steady and uncompromising android vibrations of Numan’s ‘machine period’. No tapes. No sequencers. It’s all live. It’s all Numan. It’s all Airlane.
