Core Conversation: Record Labels - What Were They?

It couldn't be more clear that the 'Record Business' and 'Record Labels' are in deep shit. The traditional model is dead, artists are fleeing and the days of the record label being the artist's home and creative center are over. So, what were the record labels, why did they exist, and what do we learn from the mistakes of the past? As every artist and manager searches for the new model to invest their careers in, there MUST be some elements of this storied past that we can take with us into the future. Or are there? We will discuss the legacy of the labels, good and bad, as well as whether we can use the foundation of the burned out building to create a new environment for creative and talented artists to thrive in. Is it best to start completely from scratch? Is it possible to reach a global audience in mass numbers without having a large major label logo on your art? What were the qualities of a 'record man' that helped the artists feel understood, nurtured and supported while they created and performed their life's work? Do those people still exist and can they still gain artist's trust and have an impact on their careers? We will discuss where we have been and where we go from here.
