“Nakia will be a tough act to follow.” "Soon-not-to-be-unknown." "No one saw him coming - but they can't forget Nakia now.” "You can't fake soul - Nakia's the real deal." "Nakia has what it takes." These are quotes recently used to describe Nakia and the sound he defines as "Appalachian-Rock'n Soul." Since his exodus from Miles Zuniga's, Small Stars in early 2006, and releasing his debut EP, "Playing The Cards" in February of 2007, Nakia set out to create a buzz in Austin. After recruiting some of Austin's best players for his band, the Southern Cousins, Nakia began performing at select private events. Those shows generated a word-of-mouth buzz helping to secure invitations to perform at venues like Austin's Continental Club and recording a live ME Television concert-special at the legendary blues club, Antone's. Nakia was also welcomed with open ears at many radio stations like KGSR and KLBJ-FM, many whose staff are outspoken fans. Nakia & His Southern Cousins currently perform every Friday night in Austin and at festivals all over Texas. Their debut EP, "Playing the Cards" was recently chosen by Margaret Moser of the Austin Chronicle as one of her Top Ten Texas Albums of 2008. They are currently writing and recording material for their first full-length release.
