Laura Marling, a former small town girl from the UK, doesn’t merely sing about what’s to be expected from someone her age - love, lust and romance. The futility of religion, self-loathing and human psychology are also common themes in her provocative, extremely mature creations. With comparisons to folk heroes Joni Mitchell and Carole King, as well as Kate Bush, her deft, cool phrasing is suggestive of someone who has a story to tell, and knows how to tell it. Still a teenager, her talents have attracted a lot of attention. Last year Laura complete nine tours, including three headline tours, opening for Jamie T, Rufus Wainwright and Devendra Banhart (Banhart avidly watched her set from the wings) and a string of summer festival appearances, Glastonbury included. A breathtaking appearance on 'Later…' led even Jools Holland to whisper to Marling that her performance was 'absolutely amazing.' Laura has just put the finishing touches to her debut album ‘Alas I Cannot Swim’ which (released by Virgin Records in the UK February '08): 'I want people to love music,’ says Laura, ‘I want people to treasure it, not just my songs, but treasure music.' It's quite a thing to aim for - but as you'll hear, Marling is no ordinary artist, hers is a talent to treasure.
