You never know when inspiration will hit. For Takka Takka singer and guitarist Gabe Levine it came upon returning to Brooklyn in early 2004 after some ill-spent time in Texas. After a year of writing music with rotating members, a band, and album, took shape. The result was We Feel Safer At Night, a collection of unique pop tunes that acknowledged Gotham inspirations like Lou Reed, Bob Dylan and Philip Glass while also recalling Guided By Voices and, yes, Pavement. We Feel Safer At Night - along with the three-track "Talk Faster EP" also included in the band's Ernest Jenning re-issue - was recorded with Charles Burst at Brooklyn's Seaside Lounge and tweaked at El Studio Studio, aka Levine's home studio, where details were meticulously added. "The recording process was kind of painful," he recalls. I spent ten hours a day working on this stuff. By the end, some of the tracks had twenty keyboard overdubs." The result is an eclectic, jubilant set of songs that continues to gain strong acclaim from the press as well as their peers. Takka Takka spent 2006 and early 2007 performing for enthusiastic crowds throughout the US including a tour with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Architecture In Helsinki. They were also met with high acclaim at this year's SXSW and CMJ festivals, and have shared local and international stages with The National, The Wrens, My Brightest Diamond and Nicole Atkins. The band, including guitarists Rene Planchon and Drew Thurlow, bassist Grady Jurrens and drummer Conrad Doucette, is spending the fall of 2007 recording their second LP, an effort being produced by CYHSY's Sean Greenhalgh. The album will be released in the spring of 2008 on Ernest Jenning.
