Maneja Beto “Maneja Beto, from Austin, played Latin alternative rock that confidently separated itself from models like Cafe Tacuba or Santana. The music was grounded in rhythms like the Mexican cumbia, but topped with cool keyboard tones that tilted the songs toward 1980's electro or jazz. -From NY Times Critic- Jon Pareles (from 2006 SXSW Review) Indie en Español from Austin, Texas. MANEJA BETO occupies the universe where Joy Division meets up with Café Tacuba in an East Austin cantina and riff on Eno-era Talking Heads songs. MANEJA BETO triumphantly performed at the Austin City Limits Festival and received serious East Coast accolades from last year’s SXSW showcase. Independently releasing 2 critically acclaimed records, the band comes with a momentum that has them already invited to this year’s Joshua Tree Festival in California and getting radio love from KCRW in Los Angeles and KUT in Austin. Over the course of several months in 2002, Beto began as Sunday afternoon musings between four like-minded guys huddled in an Austin neighborhood kitchen and grew to a 5-piece collaborative that performs regularly around Texas. Beto now happily exists in that moment between music and people – a sonic conversation in and of itself. Like Son, a genre of traditional Mexican folk music, Beto's music aims for the heart and the head, realizing this primordial soup of people, feelings and music creates a special sense Coming off of SXSW 2007- Maneja Beto have opened for Alejandro Escovedo, David Garza, and Austin legends the True Believers. They have been mentioned by Latina Magazine as a “Band to watch for 2007” and the video for their song “Los Cerros” has been a current fave and official SXSW pick for ME Television in Austin, TX. Their latest CD Accidentes de Longitud y Latitud was picked top Latin Album of the year by the Tucson Citizen. With 2 full-length releases to their credit and a live show which is gaining the attention of such rock notables as Alejandro Escovedo, David Garza, and KCRW’s Ariana Morgenstern- Alex Chavez (primer voz, guitars, keyboard, jarana, requinto), Alec Padron (bass guitar), Bobby Garza (Segundo voz, keyboard, percussion), Nelson Valente(guitars), and Patrick Estrada (drums and percussion) are the chefs mixing ingredients of son jarocho, alternative rock, Radiohead, Joy Division AND Los Lobos into one tasty caldo.
