Mothfight, a variegated cast of genre-hopping musicians, was formed in late 2006 by Kevin Adickes (former Octopus Project, Single Frame, Pitchfork Media). Though their sound relies heavily on classic orchestral instrumentation (trumpets, cellos, violins, banjos, autoharps), they also utilize hand-made tape loops, samples, circuit bent toys, and home-made instruments conjuring images of Olivia Tremor Control backing the Alabama Sacred Harp Singers. The group spent 2007 recording their first single, "Hopscotch" (which was named one 2007's best songs by Soundcheck Magazine), orchestrating an intensive Victorian-themed pageant in their hometown of Austin, TX (replete with spirit photography, phrenology readings, and a live barbershop quartet) and embarking on a notable US tour that found them carousing with members of the Dirty Projectors, the Evangelicals, Man Man, Deerhoof, Tortoise, the Castanets, et al., christening a reception of Mark Mothersbaugh's art, headlining Asthmatic Kitty's "Houston, My Ears Depend On You" festival, and concluding the year with a well-received appearance at Austin's celebrated Fun Fun Fun Fest. All this amounted to a considerable amount of buzz for the unsigned, fledgling band. Their latest studio work is to be featured on an Asthmatic Kitty compilation benefitting Habitat for Humanity and a live performance by the band is to be included on KVRX's annual Local Live compilation.
