With a New Keep It Light EP release on Cult Hero Records with label mates Voxtrot, Ausitn's Zykos are now poised for their own breakout. Since their inception in 2003, local and national critics alike have been showering Zykos with praise for their assured performances and inventive songwriting. Having released two records nationally and compiled a host of successful tours with many of your favorite bands (Cursive, TV on the Radio, Explosions in the Sky, Okkervill River, Ben Lee, Har Mar, Ed Harcourt, The Good life, and The Hold Steady), Zykos spent the last few years revitalizing their song catalog. Their latest approach is one that feels much more informed by "the classics" than contemporary trends. Despite the shift towards a more epic sound with bigger harmonies, this quintet maintains all of their trademark chill-inducing intensity. From introspective, slow-burning choral landscapes to chaotic, combustible pop, this is a versatile rock band not afraid to explore myriad sonic impulses with equal proficiency. Clearly comfortable as a group, Zykos has the confidence to let their compositions explore space and advance naturally, often chugging forward with progressive intensity. Vocal duties have shifted from being written exclusively for lead vocalist Mike Booher to a two-headed approach including Catherine Davis, which has injected a new-found richness to the arrangements. Davis' lofty, angelic strokes (also heard on recent records by Spoon and ...Trail of Dead) soften the edgy and affecting power of Booher's inimitable voice. Rhythm section Mike Roeder and Cully Symington provide vigorous organic pacing which serves as the perfect canvas for the exploratory nature of Zykos'dual guitars. On lead guitar, studio-whiz Alex Lyon (Calla, Sean na na,Built to Spill) scratches and slides his way through each song stopping just long enough to leave his indelible touch. Davis has long been cited as a focal point for her classically-styled keys, and Zykos continues to embrace her strengths. After a recent demo recording leaked online, the ensuing buzz landed Zykos in the pages of SPIN magazine alongside heavyweights Christina Aguilera, Beck and Ice Cube. WIth good reason these guys (and gal) have been tagged the "next big thing" by many publications in their short career, and after delving into the creative process for a brief hiatus, Zykos are reinvigorated and looking for the right outlet to bring their experienced sound to the masses.
