Like many music lovers of his generation James Yuill has a passion for both the emotional songwriting and atmospheres of artists such as Nick Drake, Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens and the visceral beats and dynamic rhythms of Justice, Chemical Brothers and Aphex Twin. Unlike anyone else however, James has fused these seemingly disparate influences into a magical sound of his very own. Rather than be found noodling somewhere around a smoky campfire of folktronica, James's music combines focussed, tightly worked songwriting with beats more suited to the dance floor than spliff soaked introspection. What's more remarkable is James pulls off this sonic trick without sacrificing the deeply personal, emotional quality of his songs - his debut single release 'No Surprise' being a case in point. Clearly you don't get this good overnight, and sure enough James has paid his dues. With two albums self-released on his own The Happy Biscuit Club label (motto: 'Tourne ? Droite?. HQ: James's bedroom in South Ealing), 2005's The Vanilla Disc and 2007's Turning Down Water For Air, and years spent gigging across the UK, James Yuill's craft is well and truly honed. Seeing James live is a truly unique experience: one minute you're drawn in to the tender simplicity of his voice and acoustic guitar, the next minute your head's spinning and your feet are moving to the dazzling array of beats and effects pumped out by James's laptop and boxes of tricks - not bad for a one man show that fits neatly into a reconditioned guitar case. With plans to expand the life show to include more instruments and supporting musicians, expect James Yuill to become a festival fixture over the coming years.
