Online Extremism - And the Muslims Who Fight It

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

As the evening news reminds us every day, there is a struggle between moderates and extremists within the Muslim world, and for many, the primary battleground is on the Internet. How do online Muslim communities and media balance the need for free expression and dialogue with the need to combat exclusivist and violent interpretations of the faith? How can the pervasiveness of the Internet - use of which is growing exponentially in the Muslim world - be harnessed to promote moderation without enabling the viral propagation of militancy?Using the experiences of the US-based Muslim blog aggregator hadithuna.com, panelists will explore the balancing act between free speech and silencing extremists. We will also talk about how Muslims online are trying to find a common ground with US law enforcement officials that both protects civil rights and discourages extremists from infiltrating law-abiding Muslim communities. Panelists will also speak about the strategies that both militants and moderates use to propagate their points of view, tapping into both current geopolitics as well as Islamic scholarship.
