PMOG: The Web as a Play Field

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

We play with each other constantly online, both overtly and discreetly. We throw down gauntlets for each other on Twitter, play geolocal tag on Dopplr, and overtly play generic games on Facebook. In this great big virtual world of internet, what are our shared stakes? We will present our "Passively Multiplayer Online Game," PMOG. PMOG transforms the existing topography of the internet into a game world for players to vandalize, annotate, and curate. Players experience PMOG through a Head-Up Display overlay in the Firefox web browser. This HUD interface allows players to play with each other through the world wide web, creating information quests, laying mines and building defenses around web sites. Order or chaos, destructive or productive - players choose their alignment by the way they surf and the way they use the tools of PMOG. In addition we will show other examples of surveillance data-driven entertainment from the web and out in the world, and explore how these types of experiences are softening us up for our computer overlords. We look forward to a lively Q&A!
