Alina Simone was born in Kharkov, Ukraine but sings about the glittering sprawl of America and the people she has known — faceless waitresses and data collectors, willful drifters and true-love seekers. She came to the US at a young age as the daughter of political refugees after her father refused recruitment by the KGB and was blacklisted for ‘refusal to cooperate.’ Raised in the suburbs of Massachusetts, Alina moved to Austin, Texas after graduating from art school in Boston. It was there that she first started singing in public, in the doorway of an abandoned bar on Sixth Street. Simone quickly became known for her sparse instrumentation and raw and powerful delivery. After the release of her first EP, Prettier in the Dark (2005), and her debut album, Placelessness (2007), Simone earned both national airplay and critical acclaim. The New Yorker said of Placelessness that it “evokes but does not mimic many of the pop milestones of the past decade, including the fractured beats of Radiohead and the exuberance of Björk,” and Pitchfork critic Brian Howe praised Simone for “rejecting the generically folksy strum that keeps many talented singers stuck on the coffeeshop circuit, choosing instead to wrap her smoldering voice around dark, fractured arrangements that tremble on the verge of vanishing entirely.” Simone's next album, out in July 2008, ‘Everyone is Crying Out to Me, Beware’ is a cover album featuring the music of Russian cult favorite, Yanka Dyagileva, a Siberian punk-folk singer who died under mysterious circumstances in 1991. Simone was first introduced to Yanka’s music in 2001, when a couple of Russian street performers she met hanging out in Brighton Beach made her a mix tape. Her interest in Yanka dovetailed with a growing obsession with Siberia, where she has spent an extensive part of each year living and working since 2001. After spending long stretches of time in Novosibirsk, the city where Yanka lived and died, and getting more deeply interested in both her music and life story, Simone was awarded an Emerging Artists grant from the Durham Arts Council in 2007 to record ‘Everyone is Calling Out to Me, Beware.’ Since 2005, Simone has performed at national festivals including SXSW, NXNE and Noise Pop, and toured the US, Canada, Europe and Russia, sharing bills with Final Fantasy (Tomlab), Dead Meadow (Matador), Jennifer Gentle (Subpop), Orienda Fink (Saddle Creek), Scout Niblett (Too Pure), Alec Ounsworthy (of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), Jason Collett (of Broken Social Scene), The Wedding Present and Julie Doiron (Jagjaguwar) among many others.
