Ola Podrida began as a home-recording project for film composer David Wingo (ALL THE REAL GIRLS, GEORGE WASHINGTON, GREAT WORLD OF SOUND), who, upon moving from Brooklyn back to his native Texas, spent the first half of 2005 constructing what was to become his debut album. While many of the songs recall the hushed, folk-derived sounds of artists such as Nick Drake and Iron and Wine, he also mixed it up enough with the occasional slow-burning rocker, piano ballad, and pure pop rave-up to make it impossible to just pigeonhole him as another singer/songwriter with an acoustic guitar. Upon completion of an early version of the album, Wingo started putting a band together and quickly found the perfect fit with his longtime friends Robert Patton (guitar) and Matthew Frank (drums). After playing around Austin in the spring and summer of 2006 and putting the final touches to the album with Frank and Patton, Wingo made his long-delayed move back to Brooklyn but luckily he was not alone this time around, being joined by his new bandmates. Soon after their arrival they were joined by fellow Texans Andrew Kenny (of AMERICAN ANALOG SET) on bass and Johnny Christ on keyboards, and the band quickly began to build a following not only in NYC but nationally as well (performing on the nationally syndicated show Fair Game on PRI and at SXSW 2007, Pop Montreal, and CMJ, all to glowing reviews). The self-titled debut album (mixed by Jim Putnam of The Radar Bros.) was released by Plug Research in April of 2007 and it recently received a Plug Independent Music Award nomination for Best Americana Album of 2007, and in May 2008 Ola Podrida will be performing at the Explosions in the Sky curated All Tomorrow's Parties at the Butlins Holiday Centre in England.
