Bobby Funke (Reece Thompson) is a reporter on the student newspaper at St. Donovan's High. With the lofty ambition of one day attending Northwestern's prestigious journalism school, Funke has mediocre grades and a good heart but, as a sophomore, he's also got a geeky reputation and has yet to complete a story for the paper's editor, Clara, to whom he is quite obviously attracted. Motivated by pity, a sense of fair play or a combination thereof, Clara gives Funke the plum assignment to write a profile of strikingly handsome Alpha-male school president and basketball star Paul Moore (Patrick James Taylor). In the meantime, St. Donovan's entire eco-system is thrown out of whack when someone steals recently-completed SAT tests from the safe inside Principal Kirkpatrick's office. Urged to action by the school's most popular girl, Francesca Fachini (Mischa Barton), who also happens to be Paul Moore's girlfriend, Funke undertakes the case in an attempt to write the greatest story the school paper has ever seen. Funke soon uncovers strong evidence to suggest that the culprit is none other than the subject of his newspaper story, Paul Moore. After Funke's story is published, the mighty fall and the meek ascend. Moore is thrown out of school and his reputation is destroyed, while Funke becomes something of a hero and the new object of Francesca's affections. Funke's fantasies are answered when Francesca invites him to the dance, but when he picks up Francesca on the big night, he has a run-in with her step-brother, Marlon Piazza (Luke Grimes), who has assumed the school presidency vacated by Paul Moore. But what, exactly, has Bobby's big story uncovered? After Moore denies stealing the SATs, and proves it by showing Funke his early acceptance letter to Cornell, Funke starts to question his own story, just it gets him noticed by Northwestern, which assigns a weirdly omniscient grad student to fact-check it. Fearful that his mistake could jeopardize his future, too, Funke dives back into the case. He discovers that a lot of students at St. Donovan's, under tremendous pressure to perform on standardized tests, are using performance enhancing drugs normally prescribed to combat ADD. But where are they getting them, and who has been playing around with the money in the student council's bank account?Funke's investigation leads him to discover that Paul Moore is connected to a St. Donovan's alum who now runs a gambling ring out of a frat house on the local college campus, a visit to which only holds out the promise of deeper humiliation in the years following high school. But Funke shakes off the vision of men two years his senior rushing in diapers and digs deeper into what might have motivated Moore, a student with seemingly nothing to gain and everything to lose. When Moore goes on a rampage with a paint-ball gun, targeting his successor and other key figures at St. Donovan's, including Francesca, Funke begins to piece together a vast conspiracy that could have campus-wide repercussions.
