Rarely does a band from the Midwest find themselves on stage at an event curated by one of New York city’s most well known day to day culture blogs after only five shows. Cincinnati’s Bad Veins – were just as surprised as anybody else to find themselves performing at Gothamist.com’s Movable Hype show in November 2006. Benjamin Davis (vocals, guitar, synth) and Sebastien Schultz (drums) comprise the two-piece set that originally started out as a solo project by the former. After playing one solo show, Davis quickly realized he needed something else to make his live show more spectacular. Enter Schultz, a French born but American raised drummer that had just seen his own band call it quits. Bad Veins, along with their unofficial third member Irene (a 1973 Pioneer reel to reel recorder responsible for playing back the lush background mixes), were now ready to hit the stage. Lucky breaks are few and far between on the musical landscape, but for Bad Veins they came upon theirs at their second show, when a band they were opening for stumbled upon their sound check. Upon hearing their supporting act warm up, Atlanta’s Snowden were instantly impressed. They traveled on to New York on tour and told stories to venue bookers, writers, and friends about this great new band they had played with in Cincinnati. Before long, opportunities sprung up for a few shows, and weeks later they were playing Brooklyn and Manhattan. After playing numerous shows in both New York and Cincinnati throughout 2007, Bad Veins started garnering some major attention. Giving out free demos after shows proved advantageous as numerous labels and producers came calling. Along with that attention came the opportunity to play CMJ 2007. During their first trip to the festival they turned heads, with TheTripwire naming them “one of the true highlights” and calling them “a spectacle to see on stage”. Metromix New York described their performance as “smart and infectious”, and USA Today’s Pop Candy praised them for creating “a powerful sound that deserves to be heard by more people.” CMJ itself nominated the band for voting in their “Break Out Artist of CMJ 2007” poll. Since CMJ, Bad Veins have been involved in a number of different projects. They were featured on the launch of Downtown Records’ RCRD LBL and will release four songs exclusively on the label in the coming weeks. In addition Dovecote Records will be releasing a special edition 7”/CD pack featuring the tracks “Falling Tide” and “The Lie”. On top of all that, the industrious fellows are putting the finishing touches on a batch of songs they plan on making part of their full-length debut when the time comes.
