Hypernova is an indie rock band who hail from one of the last places you would ever expect to hear great rock and roll – The Islamic Republic of Iran. Since forming in early 2000, the band has been rocking at truly underground shows to ever-growing numbers of fans in Iran -- a country where two-thirds of the population is under the age of 25, but where even listening to Western music is illegal. While Hypernova loved the fact that they were packing shows as one of hottest bands in their native country, their dream was always to one day make it to New York City -- even if to perform just one show – showing the world that rock and roll has no boundaries and that their music is indeed universal! In early 2007, the band got their wish when a chance Internet submission won them a coveted invitation to play the illustrious South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin Texas. While bureaucratic issues prevented them from getting a visa in time to play the festival, they did make it out to New York City to play their "one dream show." Little did they know that this unpromoted show at a little known venue would be the beginning of the most incredible adventure of their young lives. Although the show had a small turn-out, music editors from MTV and the NY Times were in the audience that was instantly smitten by the four young, humble, yet amazingly talented musicians from a land so far away, rocking the NYC stage as naturally and intensely as local bands like the Ramones had years before. Gushing coverage from the NY Times and MTV was followed by a swarm of media attention from all around the world, including interviews with ABC News, Telegraph UK, NPR, and many other music focused magazines The band was overwhelmed by all love and attention. It was as if the whole world was lining up to support Hypernova, understanding that by their mere presence, the band personifies the fact that our similarities and the things we love, like great rock and roll music, by far outweigh the surface cultural differences that our politicians seem so focused on. Today, Hypernova's dream continues as a series of improbable (maybe destined?) events have landed the band in Los Angeles, where they currently reside and are in the process of recording their debut album. What the future holds, nobody knows, but one thing the band is more sure of than ever is, that: Love is universal!
