Book Reading: Pro JavaScript Design Patterns
As a web developer, you'll already know that JavaScript is a powerful language, allowing you to add an impressive array of dynamic functionality to otherwise static web sites. But there is more power waiting to be unlocked -- JavaScript is capable of full object-oriented capabilities, and by applying OOP principles, best practices, and design patterns to your code, you can make it more powerful, more efficient, and easier to work with alone or as part of a team. With Pro JavaScript Design Patterns, you'll start with the basics of object-oriented programming in JavaScript applicable to design patterns, including making JavaScript more expressive, inheritance, encapsulation, information hiding, and more. With that covered, you can kick-start your JavaScript development in the second part of the book, where you'll find detail on how to implement and take advantage of several design patterns in JavaScript, including composites, decorators, facades, adapters, and many more.

Career Rev 342: Dabble Dabble, Toil and Kick Ass
Zen masters taught it. Isaac Newton knew it. Scott Adams writes about it. Now you can know it, too We're talking, of course, about the manifold benefits of being a n00b (at something). And, of course, about all the good stuff that happens post-n00bishness: the excellent side effects of being good at multiple things, even if they're not related - heck, *especially* if they're not related. So many of humanity's important discoveries, innovations and beautiful leaps of logic have been made by people whose brains were leveled up by the cross-fertilization of multiple interests and disciplines. Nano-thin specialization is out, a broad understanding of life, the universe, and everything is in. It's time to synergize, baby. So, reach outside your comfort zone, be a beginner again, and you'll be smarter, sexier, better at you job... even more valuable. With the wisdom of the ages (and a little bit from modern pundits), we'll talk about how, why, when, and where you can go about it. You won't regret it.

Edit Me! How Gamers are Adopting the Wiki Way
The current next-gen landscape has fostered a gaming environment with unprecedented level of interactivity and depth. Game wikis such as WowWiki and FFxiclopedia have long served as respected resources for the largest MMO's and have enjoyed high use awareness within the communities. As more games start to incorporate MMO-like community elements, Gaming communities have stepped up with a proliferation of fan-run wikis that have caused publishers and developers to take a closer look at the community ecosystem forming around their products. In addition to being great content resources, the communities behind the wikis have become a strong voice and typically including some of the most passionate and influential players of a game. Engaging with the wiki communities has become another way for a developer to monitor the pulse of their community and gain real-time feedback. This panel will examine what makes game wiki communities tick, how developers are leveraging this new community channel, and what to expect in the future as more and more gamers start to take community management into their own hands.

Book Reading: Subject to Change
To achieve success in today's ever-changing and unpredictable markets, competitive businesses need to rethink and reframe their strategies across the board. Instead of approaching new product development from the inside out, companies have to begin by looking at the process from the outside in, beginning with the customer experience. It's a new way of thinking-and working-that can transform companies struggling to adapt to today's environment into innovative, agile, and commercially successful organizations. Companies must develop a new set of organizational competencies: qualitative customer research to better understand customer behaviors and motivations; an open design process to reframe possibilities and translate new ideas into great customer experiences; and agile technological implementation to quickly prototype ideas, getting them from the whiteboard out into the world where people can respond to them. In Subject to Change: Creating Great Products and Services for an Uncertain World, Adaptive Path, a leading experience strategy and design company, demonstrates how successful businesses can-and should-use customer experiences to inform and shape the product development process, from start to finish.

Blonde Redhead 'Top Ranking'
I thought of the elements I use in music videos: a story, an emotion, dancing/movement, a magical transformation. I chose not to compete with the richness of the sound but to explore poverty. What if I only had one element? How could I reduce that element to it's composite parts? Could I reduce that again? If I kept reducing, would I get to the hugeness of the music? Could this be the way to visualize the hope for love and transformation that I feel in the music?

One of GRAVY«s two drummers is a highly skilled chef, and thus the idea of cooking up a rocking stew with all the bands« secret ingredients came to life. In Designing the Moment: Web Interface Design Concepts in Action, Robert Hoekman, author of Designing the Obvious, presents over 30 stories that illustrate how to put good design principles to work on real-world web application interfaces to make them obvious and compelling. From the first impression to the last, Hoekman takes a think out loud approach to interface design to show us how to look critically at design decisions to ensure that human beings, the kind that make mistakes and do things we don't expect, can walk away from our software feeling productive, respected, and smart.

Goliath
It's not the nasty divorce or the demotion at his job that sends a man over the edge, but his missing cat. The events of GOLIATH unfold without mercy or relief for a man who clings to his search for 'the sweetest most wonderful cat in the whole world.' It's not what happened to the cat that lends intrigue, but wondering what the man will do when he finds out.GOLIATH interlaces humor and poignancy with a deft hand, never letting you up for air until it's time. Comedic touches complement the most difficult moments of the film without undercutting the effects of either. The Zellner Brothers' straightforward production makes keen and sympathetic observations about everyday struggles through a man searching for the seemingly minor satisfaction of a pet when faced with never-ending obstacles and indignities.

Created in the vein of KOYANNISQATSI, GRAND WHEEL features exclusive footage from an eclectic list of settings - including a Surfside Veteran's Memorial, a California Carnival, and an Iraq War Protest in downtown Los Angeles.

Kupe and the Whale
"...people inhabiting all frequencies of the socioeconomic spectrum are intentionally reaching for some of the oldest navigational tools known to humankind: sacred ritual and metaphysical speculation, spiritual regimen and natural spell." Erik Davis, Techgnosis: Myth, Magic and Mysticism in the Age of Information, (London: Serpent's Tale, 1999)As the cultural critic Erik Davis proposed, we are living in an intensely technologised world, made possible by the ability to 'know' about characteristics of our universe and its forces through science. But this doesn't quell our appetite to appreciate the unknown side of it. Rather the opposite, new technologies, especially those which transcend and break down borders between countries, cities, homes and offices, fuel our appetite for the mystical and magical and the need to speculate about the nature of our world.Exploring the connection between global systems and human mysticism, 'Kupe and the Whale' is the key component of a larger work entitled 'The Parallels Almanac', a made mythology that presents such a mystical, speculative interpretation of the world. A world populated by the spirits of omnipresent systems like money and airliners, where a Maori warrior makes a quest in reaction to the way these immense global architectures have changed his culture.

Safari
'Safari' is an evolutionary melodrama. Here the cockroach emerges from the primordial sea, crawling on land for the first time. Then, navigating the lush, verdant jungle alongside Chalmers' ground-hugging camera, the cockroach encounters oversized insects, amphibians, and reptiles. When two gigantic rhinoceros beetles lock horns in aggressive combat, it is like 1950s sci-fi movies in which irradiated insects rule the earth. Yet this intimate vantage point also magnifies the striking physical beauty of these tiny creatures, inviting an appreciative reappraisal of numerous species we typically overlook or devalue as mere pests.

The Upsetter: The Life & Music of Lee 'Scratch' Perry
The Upsetter tells the fascinating story of Lee Scratch Perry a visionary musician and artist from poor rural Jamaica who journeyed to the big city in the late 1950's with dreams of making it in the burgeoning record industry. He burst upon the scene with a brand new sound, inventing a genre of music that would come to be called Reggae, discovering a young Bob Marley and gaining international recognition as a record producer and solo artist. Soon he was being called upon by artists as diverse as The Clash and Paul McCartney to provide his unique sound. In the 1970's he constructed his own recording studio in his backyard; The Black Ark became a hotbed for the production of Reggae and Dub music and made Scratch quite wealth y and famous. But meanwhile Jamaica was at war and politicians pitted gangsters against each other causing havoc throughout the big city. In the chaos that ensued the gangsters and the police both extorted Scratch for unknown amounts of money, threatening his life on many occasions. Despite the disruption Scratch and a Rastafarian band called The Congos managed to complete the album that would be considered by historians his single greatest artistic statement. But surprisingly Scratch's label Island Records refused to release it, believing it to be too experimental for mainstream taste. And then to make matters worse Scratch's wife and the mother of his children left him for another musician. The Black Ark mysteriously burned to the ground. Scratch fled Jamaica for a small village in Switzerland. He spent the 1990' s in relative obscurity, putting his life back together piece by piece, remarrying and raising a new Swiss family, at the same time abandoning his old Jamaican one. Then in 2006, at 70 years of age, Scratch triumphantly embarked on a world tour as a solo artist, performing sold out shows in the US ,UK, Russia, Brazil, Japan, New Zealand, to name just a few. The Upsetter charts 70 years in the life of Lee Scratch Perry, in his own words, through an exclusive interview given to American filmmakers Ethan Higbee and Adam Bhala Lough in Switzerland in 2006. It is equally a documentation of 30 y ears of Jamaican music and culture and a character study of one of the most creative and inspiring human beings alive today.

21
Columbia Pictures' high stakes action adventure 21 is inspired by the true story of the very brightest young minds in the country- and how they took Vegas for millions. Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) is a shy brilliant M.I.T. student who- needing to pay school tuition- finds the answers in the cards. He is recruited to join a group of the school's most gifted students that heads to Vegas every weekend armed with fake identities and the know-how to turn the odds at blackjack in their favor. With unorthodox math professor and stats genius Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey) leading the way, they've craked the code. By counting cards and employing an intricate system of signals, the team can beat the casinos big time. Seduced by the money, the Vegas lifestyle, and by his smart and sexy teammate, Jill Taylor (Kate Bosworth), Ben begins to push the limits. Though counting cards isn't illegal, the stakes are high, and the challenge becomes not only keeping the numbers straight, but staying one step ahead of the casinos' menacing enforcer: Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne).

Otis
OTIS is a story of suburban America gone haywire. In the midst of a serial abductor/killer's rampage, a beautiful young teen, Riley Lawson (Ashley Johnson), goes missing. When her desperate parents, Will and Kate (Daniel Stern and Illeana Douglas), are contacted by her kidnapper, an insufferable FBI Special Agent (Jere Burns) takes charge of the case. But, from deep within the psychopathic subterranean world created by Otis (Bostin Christopher), Riley turns the tables on her tormentor, manages to escape and to contact her parents. And, fed up with the tragi-comic inability of the FBI to find their girl, Will, Kate, and Riley's brother, Reed (Jared Kusnitz) decide to take matters - and justice - into their own hands. But when Otis's brother, Elmo (Kevin Pollack), shows up unexpectedly, the Lawsons find themselves mired in one of the more unusual and macabre consequences of vigilantism.Such is the premise of OTIS, a bold satire of the teenager-in-peril- grindhouse horror genre, and the fourth film of the successful Raw Feed series of DTV movies for Warner Home Video.Far from proclaiming 'Mission Accomplished,' the backed-in-a-corner Lawsons will further complicate their already deadly predicament with a surprising, unfortunate and frankly hilarious final choice. In the black-comedy/absurdist tradition of Blood Simple, Fargo and A Simple Plan, OTIS represents a new and satirical twist on suburban horror, family values and the chaotic consequences of American homemade justice.
